CHKD Honored
for Promoting Literacy
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) in Norfolk recently received the 2008 Rear Admiral Ben Hacker "Leadership in Literacy" Award for its outstanding Reach Out and Read program.

The award, sponsored by The Literacy Partnership, recognizes CHKD's corporate leadership in promoting literacy and healthy child development through Reach Out and Read.  The CHKD Reach Out and Read program began in 2001 and currently serves more than 6,400 children in Hampton Roads and northeastern North Carolina.

CHKD opened two new pediatric practices in late October and introduced visiting parents to Reach Out and Read by hosting an open house and giving away 450 books.  (Photos of the event are featured on ROR VA's blog.)

U of R Students Lip Sync For Literacy
Members of the Pi Phi Sorority at the University of Richmond have been longtime supporters of ROR VA, from helping staff community fairs to raising funds on campus.  In September, the Pi Phi's sponsored a lip sync contest and garnered $750 for ROR VA.

ROR VA is grateful for the sorority's continued support!

Welcome to Reach Out and Read Virginia's Inaugural Newsletter.

Reach Out and Read is still one of the primary ways to put new, age-appropriate books into the hands of young children who otherwise might be delayed in developing reading skills. Doctors who partner with ROR VA not only give away free books, they also educate parents about the importance of reading to their children.

Your commitment through volunteer reading, hosting book drives, spearheading fundraisers and contributing financially helps us change lives, one book at a time.

We hope you enjoy this brief update on some of our recent endeavors.

Sincerely,

Sue Rockwell,
ROR VA Executive Director

Legislative Update                    Congressman Wittman Visits Williamsburg Site

Pi Phi Volunteers 07

Virginia legislators and representatives in Congress consistently champion Reach Out and Read at the state and federal levels.

ROR VA sincerely thanks the elected officials who have visited Reach Out and Read sites in their districts in recent months, including Congressman Robert J. Wittman, R-District 1(pictured above with Johnathan Pratt). Wittman visited Riverside Pediatric Center and met with Dr. Alan Rashid, who gave him a tour the facility last summer. Wittman
also visited Olde Towne Medical Center in Williamsburg.
