Favorite Childhood Books of RORVA Doctors

Most Reach Out and Read Virginia pediatricians understand the importance of early literacy because they received books and were read aloud to at an early age by their parents and other caregivers.

In honor of RORVA Week, several North Richmond pediatricians shared memories about what they enjoyed reading when they were kids.

Dr. Joseph Boatwright:
"My parents always bought books for my sister and me, and I always wanted to read nonfiction. They ordered early reader books, and the nonfiction (titles) were mine. Books about science were my favorite."

~~

Dr. Addie Briggs:
"I liked Aesop's Fables and books by Dr. Seuss. Every child should read Dr. Seuss."

~~

Dr.  Carolyn Boone:
"I loved reading any and everything as a child. One of my favorite books to read to my own children was Where the Wild Things Are. That's still one of my all-time favorite books to give to to my patients."

Hill Day 2009

Every year during Congress Appropriations Week, Reach Out and Read providers from across the country visit Washington, DC to participate in Capitol Hill Day, which this year is on March 5.

Since 2000, ROR has been partially supported by federal funding through the U.S. Department of Education.  Federal funding for Reach Out and Read is critical to continue  serving the children and families of Virginia.

During these meetings, RORVA's Executive Director Sue Rockwell will share information about the 110 programs across the state and discuss RORVA's  plans for the future.

Local support is valued and helpful, so please feel free to contact your legislator and pledge support for RORVA.
CELEBRATING RORVA WEEK
(MARCH 2-7)

Welcome to Reach Out and Read Virginia's March Newsletter.

We're issuing this month's installment a couple of weeks early, to coincide with the first-ever Reach Out and Read Virginia Week, which kicks off today - March 2nd.

This is a fitting day for the launch of this community-building initiative, because March 2 is also the birthday of renowned author Dr. Seuss, whose beloved children's books are regularly distributed by participating ROR doctors.

We hope you'll consider partnering with us this week by participating in a book drive, visiting our blog to leave a comment about what books and reading have meant to you, or by making a contribution to RORVA. A gift of just $40 helps fund the full five-year program for one child.

RORVA sincerely thanks everyone who has joined us thus far to help change young lives for the better, one book at a time. If you're interested in learning more about becoming a partner, please feel free to contact the RORVA  office.

Enjoy this week and remember to read aloud to a child you love, as often as you can.

All the Best,

Sue Rockwell,
RORVA Executive Director

RORVA Literacy Fact for March

A comparative survey of parents before and after a ROR program was implemented by their pediatric provider showed an approximate increase of four times the regular amount of reading aloud as a favorite activity when doctors began prescribing books.
