Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughter operates an extensive Reach Out and Read program whose success they attribute in part to volunteers like Cheryl O'Connor.

This past December, Cheryl joined the then-reigning Miss Virginia, Tara Wheeler, at a Barnes & Noble bookstore to wrap gifts on behalf of RORVA.

According to ROR's CHKD Coordinator, Cheryl actively supports RORVA year-round.

"Cheryl has put in extra hours to open one of our new sites," says K.K. West. "She has set up the ROR program and is ensuring that the books are managed every month. That is on top of the site that she already volunteers for. She reads to the kids and has been super active with our program for years. She is amazing!!"

Richmond Girl Scout Troop Completes Service Project While Championing Literacy

 gs   Pi Phi Volunteers 07
RORVA salutes Richmond Girl Scout Troop 695 and its leader, Libby Gordon, for outstanding service and support.

Along with sponsoring a book drive on behalf of RORVA, the troop has collected and sorted more than 1,000  books to date.

Members of Troop 695 have adopted RORVA in their efforts to obtain a Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can earn. The award requires recipients to learn the leadership and planning skills necessary to follow through on a project that makes a positive impact on the community.

Girl Scout Troop 695 is encouraging other troops around the state to learn more about RORVA and to consider offering their support.

St. Mary's Families Participate in Book Drive
RORVA sincerely thanks Mary Virginia Merithew, a parent from St. Mary's School, who conducted a book drive on behalf of RORVA at the school. Parents and students delivered the books that were collected to five Richmond area RORVA doctors, who expressed their appreciation for the support.

 RIF Books Are In!

RORVA is proud to be a recipient of a books grant provided by Reading Is Fundamental, or RIF.

The RIF  grant will allow RORVA to distribute more than 39,000 books to young children who visit an RORVA pediatrician through December 2009. RORVA doctors across the state received their first customized shipment of RIF books earlier this month.

Dear RORVA Friends,

Welcome to the June issue of Reach OutPi Phi Volunteers 07 and Read Virginia's newsletter. As RORVA prepares to enter a new fiscal year on July 1, we're reflecting on all that has been accomplished in the past twelve months with your support and assistance.

RORVA applauds each of you who has sponsored a book drive, made financial contributions, served as a volunteer reader, or championed this organization in other ways.

Now that we've entered summer, I hope you'll find time to read a few good books on your list. While you do so, consider challenging a few friends, or members of an organization to which you belong, to a Read-A-Thon on behalf of RORVA. Decide on an amount to be raised based on the number of pages each participant reads, whether the project will be a competition, and how the funds will be collected. Contact RORVA and our staff will be happy to assist you with the endeavor.

However you spend your summer, the RORVA staff wishes you the best.

Sincere Regards,

Sue Rockwell,
RORVA Executive Director

GMU Tango Club  Raises Awareness About RORVA

Yuka Taylor, a graduate student and Tango Club member at George Mason University in Fairfax County, spearheaded a dance in early May that doubled as a fundraiser for RORVA.

About 30 individuals attended the Tango Club's first ever "Reach Out and Groove" event. Attendees and other supporters donated $100 dollars and several hundred books to RORVA.

Yuka encouraged the club to raise awareness about RORVA because of first-hand experience with the program's value. In 2006, she served as a volunteer reader in a ROR pediatric clinic at Fairfax Hospital.

Yuka  believes in the ROR mission so much that she intends to volunteer at the hospital again this summer.

RORVA Literacy Fact for June

Summer Reading Tips...
Babies need books with large, simple pictures. Images with bold red, green, blue and black are usually best.

Toddlers and older preschool children can choose their favorite books, and may want to read them repeatedly.

Don't forget, the written word is all around us. We don't only read books - we read shop names, road signs, shopping lists, advertisements, birthday cards.... All are a chance to show your child how reading works.

Steps Down
         zuckerman
(Dr. Barry Zuckerman with a young patient)

Dr. Barry Zuckerman has played many important roles at Reach Out and Read - co-founder of the national center in Boston 20 years ago, first Chair of the Board, and Chief Executive Officer.

Dr. Zuckerman recently stepped down from the positions he held. RORVA joins the national ROR board and staff in applauding his service.

Dr. Zuckerman's vision, enthusiasm, and commitment to the well-being of children have shaped Reach out and Read and helped move the organization forward.
