RORVA Literacy Fact for February

Child with bookcase
Starting a home library for your child shows how important books are.  Having books of her own in a special place boosts the chance that your child will want to read even more.

Dear RORVA Colleagues and Friends,

I hope that you all have started off 2010 as hopeful as Reach Out and Read Virginia! As daunting as these challenging economic times seem, the generosity of our RORVA friends make us feel like celebrating!

For the second year, join us to champion early childhood literacy with

Reach Out and Read Virginia Week
                March 1 - 7, 2010.

On March 1, we will join forces with others in toasting Dr. Seuss as we kick off numerous book drives and fundraising activities during the week. Many of our friends such as St. Catherine's, Markel, Deloitte Touche, the Primrose schools, among others are gearing up to run book drives and Read-a-thons again to provide new and gently used books to our programs across the state.

Last year, we gathered almost 10,000 books and we hope for the same this year.

If you would like to organize a group to participate and join us during RORVA week (before or after) with one of these projects, please call us at 804-521-0425 or email info@rorva.org.

Thank you for your continued support,

All my best,

Sue Rockwell
Director, RORVA

Barnes and Noble Holiday Drives

HO! HO! HO!
Barnes and Noble Holiday Drive Gifts over 5,233 New Books to RORVA!
Tonya Gill Primrose school reading at Barnes and Noble
LaVern Morris, of The Children's Hospital of the King's Daughter Health System reading for ROR at Barnes and Noble.

Barnes and Nobles continues to be a tremendous supporter of ROR across the country. Here in our humble state, the holiday book drives held at the Newport News, Norfolk, Chesapeake,Tysons Corner, and Richmond Virginia Center Commons and Short Pump bookstores produced 5,233 brand new books.  Because of the enthusiasm of the associates (who encourage every patron to buy a new book for RORVA) and managers, the program has grown significantly.

Many of these books were distributed to Tidewater, Richmond and Northern Virginia sites while other books will travel to rural areas of the state to reach as many children and their families as possible.

A shout out and thank you to ROR volunteers Joan Wabschall and Carol Baker, the team at CHKD, and the B&N managers and Community Liason teams: Samantha Bass, Marian Atterbury, Dawn Freeman, Doug Bank, Claudia Dorn, Kara-Arlene Langford and Ramunda Young for a successful holiday season. See you next year

Local Girl Scouts Choose ROR for Gold Award Service Project.

There are only 5,500 young women in the country who persevere to achieve the highest award in girl scouting, the Gold award. RORVA has been lucky that two such esteemed high schoolers have decided to help ROR by 'adopting a clinic.'

Sophie and Kelly will be redecorating and reorganizing reading areas, refurbishing furniture and running book drives for clinics in Alexandria and Richmond.  Both projects are currently in the planning stage but we can't wait to see the results!

If there are any other Girl Scouts looking for service project ideas Reach Out and Read can be adapted for Bronze, Silver and Gold Award levels.  Please contact Donna Faett at dfaett@rorva.org
