Well the final tally is in and the youth ministry at St Michael's church have collected 1,832 new and gently used books for Reach Out and Read programs in Grundy and Tazewell.  Already 800 of these books have been distributed.  Thank you to all. We are anticipating that several other churches in the Richmond area will also be adopting Reach Out and Read program clinics in the New Year.

Spanish Language Literacy Promotion for Pediatric Primary Care Providers.

In its first edition, the guide is ROR's most comprehensive Spanish-language tool to date. Not a script, the guide contains Spanish words and phrases (and their English translation) that providers may find helpful in communicating early literacy guidance to their Spanish-speaking patients and their families.

ROR National news
Reach Out and Read's Fall 2009 sustainability efforts will result in the distribution of 724,638 books to ROR programs across the country.  Scholastic is in the process of packing and shipping the books, which we anticipate will arrive in the next few weeks.

Through sustainability efforts, Reach Out and Read National has provided approximately 20% of the 2009 Annual Book Commitment to the vast majority of eligible programs.
RORVA Reading Tip
Organize a place for cozy reading with your child.  A cushy chair in a well-lit corner of a quiet room will help create a warm and inviting space to enjoy reading together.
Happy Holidays from all of us at
Reach out and Read Virginia

Dear Friends,
Despite these tough economic times, Reach Out and Read Virginia has continued to expand its program and sustain our existing sites. In Virginia, pediatricians through 136 programs provided guidance to parents about the importance of reading aloud and gave out 180,000 new and age appropriate books to 108,000 children ages 6 months to 5 years old.  However, there are at least an additional 76,000 children in Virginia who could qualify for the Reach Out and Read program.  Our goal is to reach all low-income children in the state, it is vital that we continue to invest in the long term education of all children.
Reach Out and Read is a proven, cost effective way of improving child education outcomes.  Ask your legislators to support Reach Out and Read and please consider donating to the program. Visit our website rorva.org for more information.

Happy Holidays to our wonderful doctors, nurses, supporters and staff - may you all find time during this holiday season to enjoy a great book!

Sue Rockwell,
RORVA Executive Director

p.s.  Charity Navigator, America's premier charity evaluator, has awarded its highest rating of 4 stars to Reach Out and Read.  This is the fifth consecutive year that Reach Out and Read has received Charity Navigator's "exceptional" rating - a distinction shared by only 4% of charities nationwide.

~RORVA Champions~

Thank you to Pitney Bowes for their fantastic donation to Reach Out and Read Virginia's Renaissance Pediatrics. Through their generosity to the Reach out and Read program,  we will be able to continue providing books for at-risk children and guidance to parents about the importance of reading aloud to their children in Chesapeake, VA.
