Dr. Carolyn Boone, a Reach Out and Reach Virginia pediatrician, brings the program alive every day in her thriving North Richmond practice. She gives anticipatory guidance to her patients and their parents about the importance of books, the joy of reading and how reading aloud twenty minutes a day will help set their child on a successful path to their future.

Every year across this state, more than 110,000 children ages 6 months to 5 years old receive free books from their doctors that help them build personal libraries and learn to read.

The ability to read is often taken for granted; but when reading is not part of a child’s regular routine, the poor literacy skills that result can have long-term negative consequences.

By working with trusted medical professionals to provide young children with age-appropriate books at each pediatric check-up, Reach Out and Read Virginia (RORVA) is helping children grow up with a love of reading and, in effect, transforming their lives.

Because of support from caring organizations and people like you, children who might otherwise never know the joy of visiting imaginary places, or exploring the world beyond the boundaries of their neighborhoods, are learning to dream big and succeed.
